Light plays a major role in the human brain. Every synapse carries light signal inside brain microcircuit. The attosecond light pulses travel through nanoscale substructures within synapses to entire circuits in the intact brain in moving the animal.

One of the greatest challenges of modern science is to decipher the functional connectome of nature's most complex organ, the human brain. A key to success in this effort is to develop and exploit technologies that allow us to probe and manipulate brain microcircuits from the level of single synapses.
